Recommendations have always been central to Spotify’s experience. Every month, millions of songs, podcasts, and audiobooks are passed between friends and family, proving that word of mouth remains one of the most powerful tools for discovery. Now, Spotify is taking that sharing to the next level with the launch of Messages—a new in-app feature that creates a dedicated space for recommendations.
Starting this week, Messages will begin rolling out to Free and Premium users aged 16 and older in select markets on mobile devices.
A Dedicated Space for Sharing
Until now, Spotify content was shared across dozens of platforms—from Instagram Stories to WhatsApp chats. Messages brings those conversations directly into Spotify, making it easier than ever to recommend a song for a road trip, swap podcasts with a parent, or share an audiobook for book club.
For artists, authors, and creators, this also means more opportunities for discovery as fans pass along their work to new listeners.
How Messages Work
Messages are one-on-one conversations built around the content you’re already sharing. Here’s how it works:
Tap the share icon from the Now Playing view and select a friend to send a track, podcast, or audiobook.
Once your message request is accepted, you can reply with text, emojis, and more Spotify content.
Access all your conversations from your profile photo in the top-left corner.
Suggestions for who to message will appear based on past activity like Blends, Jams, collaborative playlists, or shared Family/Duo plans.
Messages are designed to complement—not replace—Spotify’s integrations with platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat.
Control and Safety Built In
Spotify emphasizes that users remain in control of their conversations. You can:
Accept or reject message requests.
Block users or opt out of Messages entirely.
Report harmful content directly within the chat.
All conversations are encrypted in transit and at rest to protect user data. Spotify also uses proactive detection tools and human moderation to identify unlawful or harmful content, ensuring a safer sharing experience.
Just the Beginning
With Messages, Spotify is giving users a more seamless and secure way to share the content they love without leaving the app. As the rollout continues, Spotify plans to refine and expand the feature for users worldwide.
