In my last article, I noted that the Internet had a problem. The walls were taken down, but we could not find anything. Innovation was dying, and computers just became more boring, sadly. YouTube also has this problem.
YouTube is the premier video hosting site. As some of you may know, I have a wide variety of interests—from tech, to podcasts, to slice of life, to hacking, to OSINT, to history, to sports, etc. So why is my feed just geared toward not just a few podcasts, but basically only these podcasts? People blame the "algorithm" on TikTok for being too accurate and promoting "echo chambers," and far be it from me to ever defend TikTok or China, but here in the United States of America... I'd like our algorithms to be better.
I like watching channels about people I have never heard of. Maybe someone will go do a deep dive on Jake Daugherty or IShowSpeed, and I will learn about them and what scandals they have participated in. Maybe they will be talking about some TikTokker with 2.2 million followers I have never heard of. I just like these podcasts, and this presents two issues. Firstly, I want to see more YouTubers. I hear of all these YouTubers that fit the template, you know: fast quick edits, reactions, big surprises, etc.... but other than Liv, I never see any of them... or know who they are.
As a tech and culture journalist, I'd expect to know who some of these people at least are. I can't then research them and see how they got their start and find out what mistakes I need to avoid (it's probably just don't date random women or drive a car 207 mph, but still). I'd like to see who they are. They also go on podcast circuits, and the people who do documentaries on them find them, but I get the same 3 or 4 podcasts every day... People say there are too many podcasts, but discovering new ones is so hard. YT doesn't suggest cool day-in-the-life vids, documentaries, new podcasters, or even the traditional YouTuber??? What is going on? For instance, I found a YouTuber via YT Shorts that was doing vlogs and the like, one I would have never found on the feed or in search (searching for new YouTubers is genuinely hard), and I'm like, how do people find y'all??? I have no idea who any of them are.
Secondly, with the interview podcasts, I once again need to ask: where are y'all? If you type in "interview podcast," you will get the really big channels, but I'm sure—and I know—that there are more. The get-ready-with-me, day-in-my-life, people-just-talking types. Lastly, I KNOW full well there are Christian YouTube talk/podcast hosts, kind of like Focus on the Family radio but for YouTube. I know there are Christian YouTubers who don’t just talk about the Bible… but I can’t find them. The internet is a vast and wonderful place, and at times it seems like everyone but me gets to enjoy it.
