Siri is dead. Long Live Gemini

Siri is dead, long live Siri. In a win for #TeamAndroid and team 13ers everywhere, Google’s Gemini is going to power Apple’s much-maligned Siri. Apple, with its commitment to “privacy” and not “spying” on its users, has seen the light and realized that not all data is bad data. Siri, for the past couple of years—even with the new Apple Intelligence—has been utter trash and hated by iPhone haters like myself and Apple super fans alike.

In a joint statement, Google and Apple released, Google stated, “Apple and Google have entered into a multi-year collaboration under which the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google's Gemini models and cloud technology. These models will help power future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized Siri coming this year. After careful evaluation, Apple determined that Google's Al technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and is excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for Apple users. Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute, while maintaining Apple's industry-leading privacy standards.”

Google Gemini has seen impressive growth, even causing OpenAI to declare a “code red” last December. This comes after many snafus, such as the delay of the Bard/Gemini chatbot until after OpenAI released ChatGPT in November 2022, because Google was scared and thought that the tech was too “dangerous”; Gemini’s hyper-censored image gen models after it had a glitch that did not allow it to generate white people; and Google Search falling to 89% of the market share with new competitors such as Perplexity popping up, as well as inaccurate AI overviews. Now Gemini powers Google Search AI mode, its decent assistant on Android (Gemini with Gemini Live), and the chatbots Nano produces the best, most realistic images.

Apple has not been able to move fast and still managed to break Siri and its AI advancements with a horrible photo-erasing feature. Siri is horrible, and there’s no chatbot to speak of its own. With Apple admitting Google won the AI race… maybe it will admit that it also won the operating system race. God Bless, Tech Talk To You Later!!!
